APAC - Silver Sponsorship

The Global Grid Forum (GGF) is a community-initiated forum of thousands of individuals from industry and research leading the global standardization effort for grid computing. GGF's primary objectives are to promote and support the development, deployment, and implementation of Grid technologies and applications via the creation and documentation of "best practices" - technical specifications, user experiences, and implementation guidelines.

AIIA is the peak body in Australia for the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry, AIIA works across many areas to assist the ICT industry to meet its business objectives in corporate and government markets.

GrangeNet (GRid And Next GEneration Network) is a 3-year program that is installing, operating and developing a multi-gigabit network to support grid and advanced communications services. GrangeNet is a testbed for the next generation of services aimed at supporting virtual organisations and user communities and will strengthen Australia’s participation in the international research community.

The members of the joint venture are AARNet, APAC, DSTC, Cisco Australia and PowerTel. Five APAC partners – ac3, ANU, CSIRO, QPSF and VPAC – are participating in the GrangeNet Program. The partners are demonstrating a range of grid services such as distributed computing, collaborative visualisation, cooperative environments, digital libraries and remote instrumentation, that take advantage of broadband networks and advanced computing facilities.

During the initial three years (2002-4), APAC is contributing $150,000 per annum to the GrangeNet Program and GrangeNet is matching these funds. The total funds are supporting two ANU staff located at the National Facility working in the area of large-scale data sets.

At the end of June 2004, the GrangeNet network connected 45 sites at 33 organisations (compared with 36 sites at 25 organisations at the end of 2003). To achieve these connections, GrangeNet peers with AARNet, CeNTIE and regional networks in Perth (WARNO), Melbourne (VRNO), Canberra (ACTRNO), Sydney (Sydney Basin & NSWRNO) and Brisbane (QRNO). The network continues to operate reliably: the GrangeNet NOC report indicates that more than 600Tbytes has been carried and that the network reliability this year has been 99.86%. More than 30Tbytes of international traffic has flowed between the GrangeNet network and international peer networks.

As part of the Australian Government’s Backing Australia’s Ability, GrangeNet has been offered $4m for a 2-year extension (to the end of 2006). This offer arose from the recommendations in a review of the Advanced Networks Program by the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA). The members of the GrangeNet consortium have indicated they will continue to participate in the GrangeNet program under similar management arrangements. The program plan and the agreements for the extension are expected to be approved before the end of 2004.
